Scholarship-for-cash scandal: Kofi Ofosu Nkansah under NIB investigation

The National Investigation Bureau (NIB) has taken up an investigation into allegations that government scholarships intended for studies abroad are being sold for cash. This follows claims made by Mr. Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, former Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), during a radio discussion on Sompa 106.5 FM.

In the broadcast, which was conducted in Twi and has since circulated widely, Mr. Nkansah alleged that some individuals paid as much as GH¢100,000 to secure government scholarships for overseas studies. He also claimed that certain officials were involved in facilitating these transactions.

The issue caught the attention of President John Dramani Mahama, who described the allegations as serious and of grave public concern, especially given the government’s commitment to transparency, integrity, and equal access to educational opportunities.

In a letter cited by The Observer Times, the President directed the NIB to immediately investigate the claims, establish their factual basis, identify persons involved, and determine the veracity of the allegations. The Bureau is also required to submit its findings for presidential consideration and any subsequent action deemed necessary.

“The attention of the President has been drawn to a radio discussion aired on Sompa 106.5 FM, during which a panelist, Mr. Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, alleged that an individual paid to secure a scholarship to pursue studies abroad,” the letter stated.

The investigation is expected to clarify whether government officials engaged in misconduct and to reinforce public confidence in the administration of scholarship schemes. Any officials found culpable may face sanctions or prosecution in line with the law.
