The Member of Parliament for Akim Oda Constituency, Hon Akwasi Acquah, says Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s promise to allocate 10 government appointments per constituency under a future New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration has been warmly received by party delegates and is likely to propel him to victory in the party’s presidential primaries.
Speaking in an interview with The Observer Times, Hon Acquah said the proposal resonates strongly with grassroots members who, in his view, felt neglected under previous administrations despite strong governance outcomes.
According to him, the NPP’s loss in the most recent general elections was partly due to the party’s failure to adequately cater for the needs of its grassroots supporters.
“The party lost the recent elections because it failed to look at its grassroots supporters, even though the then government excelled in governance,” he said.
Hon Acquah explained that there was no conscious and structured plan to take care of the welfare and expectations of party foot soldiers, a situation that created dissatisfaction among loyal supporters at the base of the party.
He said Dr Bawumia’s constituency-based appointment proposal has therefore been welcomed by delegates, who see it as a practical step towards recognising and rewarding grassroots contributions.
The Akim Oda MP further noted that Dr Bawumia stands out among the other aspirants contesting the NPP flagbearership, citing his experience and performance as Vice President. According to him, Dr Bawumia’s track record in government places him in a strong position and reinforces delegates’ confidence in his leadership ahead of the party’s presidential primary.
The NPP Presidential Primaries are scheduled for January 31, 2026, where party delegates from across the country will vote to select the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is among the leading contenders, facing competition from other aspirants including Mr Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr Bryan Acheampong, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Mr Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
The outcome of the primaries will determine who leads the NPP into the 2028 elections and will set the tone for the party’s campaign strategy ahead of the general elections.
