Ghanaian singer, songwriter, and producer KiDi has revealed that going on stage late for performances is something he strongly dislikes.
Speaking in an interview with ZionFelix, he explained that delays are often caused by promoters rather than the artistes themselves.
“There have been so many shows I’ve performed at here and elsewhere where I went on stage at 2 a.m., 3 a.m., even 4 a.m., and it wasn’t because I wanted to.
“It’s because promoters say that if you come on early, fans won’t buy drinks and might leave early, so you should wait. But for me, I do not want to come on late,” KiDi stated.
He added that even within his own team, timing is a frequent point of disagreement.
“My team will tell you, even within my team, one of the biggest fights we have is about timing. I actually hate going on stage late.
"When people complain during concerts that the artiste is late, I understand because I hate it with a passion. I absolutely detest going on stage late,” he said.
KiDi further explained that in some areas strict venue closing times help enforce punctuality.
“When we travel, sometimes the venue gives you a closing time, so if you’re an artiste and you come on stage at 10:55 p.m., you are late.
"And I love that because it forces everybody to act right,” he noted.
He stressed that making fans wait for hours is disrespectful.
“Someone can arrive at 9 p.m., and then you come on stage at 2 a.m. that’s an insult to them. I want to come on stage when the energy is right,” he said.
Reflecting on his own show last December, KiDi said he pushed for an earlier performance time out of respect for fans.
“When I had my first show last December, even within my own team, I wanted to go on stage at 10 p.m. because I understand what it means when fans have been waiting for hours,” he added.
