Kumawood actress, Harriet Naa Akleh Okanteh, popularly known as Auntie Bee, has opened up about the financial struggles she faces despite spending years in the movie industry.
Speaking in an interview, the actress said that although acting made her popular, it has left her with little to show. “My acting career left me with nothing. I have nothing to boast of after years of acting,” she said.
Auntie Bee explained that aside from acting, she used to work as a master of ceremonies (MC) to earn extra income. However, she disclosed that, the MC industry has become very competitive, making it difficult to get bookings.
“The work I used to do alongside acting was MCing, but now everyone is an MC. The world is big, and if someone doesn't recommend you, you may not get the job. But whenever we get the opportunity, we do it,” she said.
The actress also thanked the founder and leader of the Anointed Palace Chapel (APC), Rev. Obofour, for buying her a car. However, she disclosed that the vehicle is currently not in use because it has developed a fault.
“Rev. Obofour bought me a car, and I’m very grateful to him. But if people don’t see me using it anymore, it’s because it has broken down and is at the mechanic’s shop. If anyone is willing to buy me a car, I’ll be happy. The same goes for a house,” she appealed.
Expecting criticism over her comments, Auntie Bee said public figures are often judged on whether they keep their struggles to themselves or openly ask for help.
“After this interview, some people will say I’m asking for a car and a house. I don’t like that. If we stay quiet, people ask why we never spoke up about our needs. But when we do, it becomes another problem,” she lamented.
