'Verify every time' — MoMAG urges mobile money agents after GH₵10k swap scam

The Mobile Money Advocacy Group Ghana (MoMAG) has warned agents to stay alert and follow proper procedures after an alleged swap scam cost one agent GH₵10,000.

In a Facebook post on Friday 17, 2026, MoMAG said a customer began a transaction but later claimed they could not reach the intended recipient and asked for the payment to be cancelled.

The agent stopped the transaction and returned the cash. Moments later, the same customer came back with a bundle wrapped in the same black rubber band and handed it to the agent. Trusting it was the original bundle, the agent accepted the notes without recounting them.

After the customer left, the agent discovered the GH₵10,000 she had earlier counted in GH₵200 notes had been replaced with GH₵1 notes.

MoMAG called the incident a painful reminder of the risks agents face and urged that cash be verified at every stage of a transaction.

“Never trust the appearance of the bundle, verify the contents every single time, whether the customer is new, familiar, polite or in a hurry, recount the money before proceeding," the group said, warning that fraudsters exploit distractions, haste, and assumptions.

It advised agents to recount any cash that leaves and returns to their hands, resist pressure to act quickly, minimise distractions during transactions, and follow established transaction protocols to prevent losses.
