Yaw Gahornu, 87, has been jailed for 20 years with hard labour for defiling a girl aged 9 at Ofankor, Accra.
The Tesano Divisional Police Command said the conviction followed investigations into allegations that he repeatedly abused the child between July and August 2026.
Police said the case came to light on August 29, when the child’s mother returned from work and noticed bloodstains on her daughter’s clothing. The child then disclosed the abuse.
Investigators found that Gahornu lured the child to his sleeping quarters and threatened to kill her if she told anyone.
On August 31, his granddaughter witnessed the abuse and alerted family members, who reported the matter to the police. Gahornu was arrested and charged with defilement.
He was arraigned before the Gender Based Violence Court at the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) headquarters, where he was found guilty and sentenced.
The Accra Regional Police Command welcomed the outcome, saying it reflects its commitment to protecting children and other vulnerable persons.
It urged the public to report cases of child abuse promptly to the police so that appropriate action can be taken.
