The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of HS College, Mrs Serwaa Akoto Akotey, has called on both the Ghanaian government and parents to place greater value on practical and vocational skills, describing them as critical drivers of nation-building and economic development.

Speaking to the media following the institution’s joint graduation and matriculation ceremony held at the GNAT Hall on Saturday, August 29, Mrs Akotey emphasised that a nation's growth heavily relies on a workforce equipped with hands‑on expertise.

Mrs Akotey specifically appealed to parents to stop dictating career choices for their children, particularly young men, and instead allow them the freedom to pursue their genuine interests in trade and practical vocations.

"Parents must allow their children to decide their future paths. When a child shows interest and willingness to learn a practical trade or handy work, parents must encourage and support them rather than intervene or force alternative paths upon them."

She further urged the government to invest heavily in technical and vocational education, adding that elevating the status of practical skills will be key to unlocking sustainable development across Ghana.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Magnus Reindorf Sam of the National Police Headquarters rebutted long‑held stereotypes surrounding trade professions.

"Anybody that speaks against civic or vocational training saying it is for the illiterate or those with shallow minds doesn't know what they are saying," he stated.

He emphasised that trades such as sewing, construction and carpentry require deep knowledge, and that vocational training must no longer be underrated in the country.

Dr Peter Boahin, Director of Standards, Curriculum Development and Enforcement at CTVET, applauded the government for its recent initiatives to modernise TVET institutions.

He noted that the structural upgrades will provide students with extensive hands‑on experience, ensuring they are well prepared to enter the workforce upon graduation.
