Veteran Ghanaian actress Pascaline Edwards has opened up about her spiritual beliefs, revealing that she does not believe in religion because, in her view, it serves as a form of enslavement rather than true spirituality.
Speaking to Zion Felix, the actress explained that she sees religion as a system created by people to control others through ideologies and doctrines.
According to her, she believes spirituality should be personal and direct, rather than being tied to organised religious structures.
“I don’t believe in religion. I believe religion is enslavement. It’s like someone creating a group, gathering people and imposing their ideology on them, then calling it religion. I don’t believe in that,” she stated.
Pascaline Edwards further shared that she prefers to focus on the ancestors and family members she personally knows and can trace her roots to, instead of biblical figures she feels disconnected from.
“I believe my true ancestors are the people who gave birth to me here on earth, my mother, my father, and my grandparents. Those are the people I know. Adam and Abraham.
" I don’t know them. My name is Edwards, and I don’t see any direct connection between us,” she said.
Despite distancing herself from organised religion, Pascaline Edwards clarified that she still believes deeply in God and the teachings of Jesus Christ.
According to her, Jesus himself did not promote religion but rather preached about truth, purpose, and a direct relationship with God.
“Even when Jesus came, he did not involve himself in religion. I follow the words of Jesus, who proclaimed that God is there. He is the way, the life and the truth, so I’m following that path,” she explained.
She also disclosed that she has studied different religious books, including the Bible, the Quran and other spiritual texts, and concluded that they all point to one supreme source. For that reason, she sees no need to confine herself to one religious group.
“I’ve read the Bible, I’ve read the Quran, and I’ve read other religious books. I realised that all of them point to one source, so why should I belong to a religion when I can connect directly to the source?” she questioned.
According to the veteran actress, her belief is rooted in the idea that God exists within every human being, making spiritual connection personal rather than institutional.
“Even Jesus said in the Good Book that we would do exploits because God is in us. So if God is in me, why should I enslave myself in religion?” she concluded.
