Lawyer for the defence of a woman accused of making threatening remarks against President John Dramani Mahama, Nana Adjei Baffuor Awuah, has described bail conditions imposed by an Accra Circuit Court as excessive after his client was granted GH¢1 million bail in a case involving alleged viral social media threats.
The Accra Circuit Court 2 granted bail to Aminat Mahama, also known as Akosua Serwaa Minat, following her appearance before the court in Accra. The court set two sureties as part of the conditions, with one required to be a civil servant earning not less than GH¢5,000 monthly.
As part of the ruling, the accused is also required to deposit either her Ghana Card or passport with the police and report regularly to investigators.
Reacting after the decision, defence counsel Nana Adjei Baffuor Awuah said the terms imposed an unfair burden on his client and would be difficult to meet given her circumstances.
“The bail conditions are excessive,” he stated.
Aminat Mahama was arrested by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team (CVET) after videos circulating on TikTok allegedly showed her making insulting remarks against the President, issuing threats against him and the First Lady, and encouraging acts of violence.
Police said the videos surfaced on May 19, 2026, prompting a joint operation between CVET and the Surveillance Unit of the National Operations Department. She was subsequently tracked and arrested on May 20 at Sekyere Zongo in the Sekyere Kumawu District of the Ashanti Region.
