The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it will petition the Chief Justice over what it describes as the unjustified nine-day remand of its Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, and is seeking a formal probe into the conduct of the presiding Circuit Court judge.
The party is expected to submit the petition to Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie on Friday, May 22, 2026, following Abronye’s court proceedings at Circuit Court 9.
Abronye DC is standing trial on charges of offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace and publication of false news, linked to comments he allegedly made about a Circuit Court judge in a viral social media video.
Speaking to journalists after court proceedings on Wednesday, NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Koduah said the party strongly disagrees with the decision to remand Abronye for nine days, describing it as unjustified and unnecessary.
He argued that bail should have been granted at the earliest stage of the proceedings, insisting the circumstances did not warrant detention.
The court subsequently granted Abronye bail in the sum of GHS100,000 with two sureties after several days of legal arguments.
The NPP maintains that the remand period raises concerns about fairness and judicial discretion, and believes the judge’s conduct warrants investigation by the Chief Justice.
Party officials also allege that aspects of the proceedings appeared prejudicial, though those claims have not been independently verified.
The case has sparked political debate, with the NPP alleging institutional bias against its members, while prosecutors insist the matter remains a straightforward criminal trial that should proceed without political interference.
