Northern leaders demand Linda Ocloo’s resignation over “punishment” comment

A group of leaders from Ghana’s northern regions has called for the resignation or dismissal of Linda A. Ocloo following remarks they describe as offensive and demeaning to the people of the north.

The release was issued by Bernard Mornah on behalf of the people of the northern regions.

In a statement issued on May 6, 2026, the group condemned comments attributed to the Greater Accra Regional Minister and Member of Parliament for Shai Osudoku, in which she allegedly suggested that public officials who engage in misconduct could be transferred to Northern Ghana as a form of punishment.

The group, representing residents of the Northern, North East, Savannah, Upper East, and Upper West regions, described the statement as “reckless” and an affront to the dignity and identity of millions of Ghanaians.

They argued that such characterisation reduces the region to a symbol of punishment and reflects prejudice inconsistent with national leadership.

“Northern Ghana is not and will never be a penal destination for administrative discipline,” the statement said, highlighting the region’s contributions to agriculture, public service, academia, and national leadership.

The group also pointed to what it described as irony in the remarks, noting that John Dramani Mahama, a native of Northern Ghana, has played a significant role in national leadership, including influencing political careers across the country.

According to the statement, the comments undermine national unity and reinforce harmful stereotypes, contrary to the expectations of public office.

The group is demanding that Ocloo undertake a formal visit to the northern regions to engage traditional leaders and communities as part of efforts to demonstrate accountability and sincerity.

It further called for her resignation or dismissal, arguing that her continued stay in office would be incompatible with inclusive governance.

Additionally, the group urged the government to reaffirm its commitment to national unity by promoting the equal dignity of all regions and citizens.

“The people of Northern Ghana will not accept any attempt to diminish our identity, contributions, or rightful place within the Ghanaian state,” the statement stressed.
