Mahama urges TUC and Organised Labour to speak out as State firms are turned around

President John Dramani Mahama has urged the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and organised labour not to sit back or appear aloof when management and governing boards mismanage their enterprises.

Speaking at the 2026 May Day celebration at Jackson Park in the Eastern Region, he emphasised that when enterprises collapse, workers suffer the most.

He urged them to speak out and ensure corrections are made to prevent matters from escalating to the point where enterprises collapse in Ghana.

"I urge the TUC and the organized Labour not to sit back and look unaloof when management and governing boards are mismanaging their enterprises because when these enterprises collapse it is the workers that suffer the most," he stated.

He added that the government has worked hard to revive state-owned enterprises that were previously on the brink of collapse.

He cited examples including the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) returning to operations, the government recapitalising the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) and the National Investment Bank (NIB), and the Tema Shipyard bouncing back, adding that many such enterprises are now running more efficiently.

"Government has worked very hard to revive many state owned enterprises that were previously in a state of collapse.

"I'm pleased to inform you that the Tema Oil Refinery is back in operation, government has recapitalized the Agric Investment Bank and the National Investment Bank and many other enterprises are now running efficiently," he said.
