'They took a U-turn but we forced them to be in line with their promise' - Rev Ntim Fordjour

The Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has stated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has demonstrated beyond doubt that it has taken a U-turn on its stance on LGBTQ issues.

In a recent interview, he emphasised that although the President made it clear that LGBTQ matters are not his priority, Ghanaians have compelled the party to align with the promises it made.

He said the Christian community, the Muslim community, the Traditional community, and everyone else expressed disappointment with the NDC.

"The president indicated it and they made it clear that indeed casting stone is not a priority because they are occupied with bread and butter matters but it didn't sit well with Ghanaians and we saw the push, the anger, everybody coming strong, indicating their disappointment.

"They demonstrated beyond the double that they had taken a U-turn from this but Ghanaians are saying that we have not taken a U-turn so they took a U-turn but we forced them, " he stated.

He added that in Ghana’s history, from Dr. Kwame Nkrumah down to President Akufo-Addo, none of them made LGBTQ Bill issues a major campaign promise during their campaign period, adding that the only exception was President John Dramani Mahama.

He further asserted that President Mahama and his NDC government have portrayed members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as a party that lauds and pampers LGBTQ.

He noted that the party yet attempted to take a U-turn once it came to power.

Rev. Fordjour assured that the bill will be passed as soon as Parliament reconvenes and will then be sent to the President for assent.

He warned that any further delay would entrench the public perception and the reality already demonstrated.

"Parliament is going to pass the bill and if they delay it further it will just go to entrench the perception and the reality already demonstrated but I am sure they will want to do what is right," he said.
