John Dramani Mahama has stated that discussions surrounding LGBTQ issues are not the most pressing priority for Ghana, emphasizing that government remains focused on addressing the basic needs of citizens.
Speaking during a Presidential Dialogue with Civil Society Organisations at the Presidency on Monday, March 30, 2026, President Mahama acknowledged the ongoing local and international debate on LGBTQ rights but maintained that Ghana’s immediate concerns lie elsewhere.
“It is not the most important issue we face as a nation. We are still grappling with the provision of basic needs such as education, healthcare, jobs, food, clothing and shelter,” he said.
He described the subject as sensitive and highly emotive, noting that even advanced democracies continue to grapple with it, and stressed the need for careful handling within Ghana’s constitutional and cultural context.
“Our position is guided by our constitution, respect for human rights and dignity of all persons, and the need to preserve social cohesion,” he added.
According to the President, the ongoing debate over the private members’ bill before Parliament has triggered a complex national conversation, with strong and divergent opinions across society.
“These issues must be addressed through democratic processes, our core values, dialogue and the rule of law,” he stressed.
President Mahama reiterated that Ghana’s approach will continue to be guided by respect for human rights, the dignity of all persons, and the preservation of social cohesion.
He also acknowledged reactions from international partners, including developments involving institutions such as Lincoln University, noting that such responses highlight the importance of sustained engagement grounded in mutual respect.
“Ghana will continue to uphold its democratic values while engaging constructively with the international community,” he said.
The President assured that Ghana remains committed to its democratic principles while constructively engaging global partners on sensitive issues.
“We must have balanced discussions that reflect our priorities and realities,” he added, reaffirming government’s focus on improving the living conditions of Ghanaians.
