President Mahama pledges to end ‘No-Bed Syndrome’ and complete stalled health projects

President John Dramani Mahama has committed to completing the stalled La General Hospital project, assuring Ghanaians that his administration will prioritise finishing existing health infrastructure over starting new, vanity projects.

Delivering an address on the state of the country, President Mahama emphasised a “no-abandonment” policy for critical infrastructure.

“My government remains firm in its commitment not to abandon unfinished projects,” Mahama declared, signalling a shift towards continuity in healthcare delivery.

In a direct move to improve emergency care, Mr. Mahama announced new mandates for the Ministry of Health.

He pledged to eliminate the “unacceptable no-bed syndrome” that has plagued Ghanaian hospitals for years.

The Ministry will be directed to ensure no patient is turned away from a health facility, and facilities must attend to emergency cases immediately, even under “makeshift conditions” if necessary.

Beyond the La General Hospital, Mahama listed several high-priority facilities that would receive immediate attention under his leadership. These hospitals include:

"Sewua Regional Hospital, Afari Military Hospital, KATH Maternity and Children’s Block (Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital)."

Mr. Mahama also outlined his vision for regional expansion, stating that the 2026 budget would include specific provisions to commence work on new regional hospitals.

The overarching goal, according to Mahama, is to move past fragmented care and build a “stronger, more resilient, and self-reliant health system” that provides equitable medical services to every Ghanaian, regardless of their location.
