Communications minister labels alleged Russian intimate‑image scheme a cyber‑crime

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations of Ghana, Samuel Nartey George, has announced that the matter concerning a Russian national is being treated strictly as a cyber‑crime.

Speaking to the press, he emphasised that the non‑consensual recording, publication or dissemination of any intimate images, where there is a reasonable expectation of privacy, constitutes a criminal offence.

He referenced section 67 of the Cyber Security Act 2020, Act 10,38, of Ghana's constitution.

Hon. Sam George that consent to a private encounter does not, in law, amount to consent for publication or distribution.

"Regarding an ongoing cyber-crime investigation involving the alleged non-consensual recording and dissemination of intimate images of Ghanaian women by a Russian national.

"Let us make it clear from doubting that this matter is being treated strictly as a cyber-crime; it's not a moral issue, it's a criminal issue." He stated.

He highlighted that preliminary investigations by the Cyber Security and Law Enforcement Agency indicate that the suspect allegedly recorded private encounters without consent for the purpose of publication.

The suspect subsequently monetised the content through an online platform, reportedly charging fees for access and receiving payments via cryptocurrency.

He noted that investigations are ongoing to secure justice for the Ghanaian women involved.
