Asante Kotoko’s chance of winning the Ghana Premier League took a big hit after they lost 1-0 at home to rivals Hearts of Oak.
Interim coach Prince Yaw Owusu said the defeat at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday has made the club’s title hopes very fragile.
The match, billed as a season-defining "Super Clash" in Kumasi, saw Kotoko fail to use their home advantage. Hearts’ Baba Adamu rose above the defence to head in the only goal in the 15th minute.
Kotoko searched for an equaliser but could not break down a stubborn Hearts back line. The result was Kotoko’s third poor outing in a row across all competitions.
The loss follows a tough week that included a league defeat to Heart of Lions and an early FA Cup exit to Aduana FC. Kotoko now sit fifth with 35 points.
Yaw Owusu spoke plainly after the match. "This defeat to Hearts makes our title ambition very difficult," Owusu conceded. "Now we need to fight very hard before we can get the title."
With the leaders pulling away, Kotoko must quickly recover. They travel to Wenchi Sports Stadium this weekend to play Young Apostles.
