WAFCON 2026: Algeria beat Morocco 3-2 on penalties to secure third place

Algeria secured third place at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations with a 3-2 victory on penalties against hosts Morocco, after the match finished 1-1 in normal time.

The third-place play-off at the Stade Olympique in Rabat produced late drama as Morocco relinquished what looked like a winning position, allowing Algeria to force a shootout.

Morocco had taken the lead and appeared to be in control during the closing stages, but a defensive mistake enabled Algeria to score a late equaliser and take the contest to penalties.

The tension persisted into stoppage time when Morocco were presented with a chance to win from the spot but failed to convert.

Algeria then capitalised in the shootout, prevailing 3-2 on penalties to secure the bronze medal and leaving the hosts to settle for fourth place.

The result will be especially disappointing for Morocco, who had been favourites to win before a late defensive lapse, the missed stoppage-time penalty and the subsequent shootout altered the outcome.

Algeria’s triumph provides a strong conclusion to their WAFCON 2026 campaign, while Morocco will ponder how a late collapse cost them third place.
