The one-week observation for the late Ghanaian gospel icon Yaw Sarpong will be held on Wednesday, February 19, 2026, at Asuofua Park in Kumasi.
Yaw Sarpong’s passing was confirmed on 20 January 2026 by his manager, Nana Poku Ashis, leaving his family, the Asomafo group, and the broader gospel fraternity in deep mourning.
The solemn gathering is expected to bring together family members, gospel musicians, church leaders and fans to honour the life and enduring legacy of the celebrated musician.
The loss comes at a particularly difficult time for the Asomafo group, as fans are still grieving the recent passing of Maame Tiwa, a long-serving member whose death occurred only weeks before Yaw Sarpong’s demise.
Yaw Sarpong was widely respected as the founder and leader of Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo, a group that played a pivotal role in shaping Akan gospel music. His work was known for its rich theological message, disciplined vocal delivery and well-structured choral arrangements.
Over the years, the group’s spiritually uplifting and musically refined compositions influenced church choirs across Ghana and helped raise standards in gospel performance and choir direction.
Some of his most popular songs, including "Wo Haw Ne Hwan", "Tie Obiaa", "Aduro Yesu", and "Awurade Kasa", remain widely performed in churches and Christian gatherings across the country.
The upcoming observation will serve as an opportunity for the gospel community and admirers to celebrate Yaw Sarpong’s remarkable contributions and to reflect on the lasting impact of his ministry through music.
