The international football community is mourning the death of Dutch referee Rob Dieperink, who has passed away at the age of 38.
His death comes only weeks after he missed the opportunity to officiate at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he had initially been selected to serve as a Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
The news of Dieperink’s passing was confirmed by the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB), which described his death as a significant loss to Dutch and international football.
In a statement, the association expressed shock and sadness, paying tribute to Dieperink as a highly respected referee and a valued colleague whose dedication to the game earned him admiration throughout the football community.
The KNVB also extended its condolences to his family, friends and everyone who worked alongside him during his officiating career.
Dieperink had originally been included among the officials selected for the 2026 FIFA World Cup before FIFA withdrew his appointment in May.
The decision followed his arrest in London over an allegation of sexual assault involving a teenage boy.
Following an investigation, the Metropolitan Police later concluded that there was insufficient evidence to continue the case.
No criminal charges were filed against Dieperink.
Throughout the investigation, the Dutch referee consistently maintained his innocence and stated that he had fully cooperated with the Metropolitan Police, FIFA, UEFA and the KNVB.
Despite the conclusion of the investigation, his World Cup appointment was not reinstated.
His death has prompted tributes from across the football world.
FIFA also expressed its condolences after learning of his passing, joining the KNVB in recognising his contribution to the sport.
At the time of reporting, no official cause of death had been announced.
Dieperink built a distinguished refereeing career over several years and was widely regarded as one of the Netherlands’ leading match officials.
He began officiating in the Dutch Eredivisie in 2017 and steadily established himself as one of the country’s most respected referees.
His performances earned him opportunities to officiate at major international competitions.
Among his notable appointments was serving as a Video Assistant Referee during UEFA Euro 2024, where he worked alongside some of Europe’s top officials.
His selection for the 2026 FIFA World Cup had been viewed as another significant milestone in his professional journey before it was ultimately withdrawn.
Football analysts said Dieperink was respected for his professionalism, technical knowledge and calm approach to officiating high-pressure matches.
His passing has left many colleagues, players and supporters reflecting on his contribution to football both domestically and internationally.
The news has also sparked renewed discussion about the personal challenges officials sometimes face while working under intense public scrutiny.
As tributes continue to pour in from football organisations and members of the global sporting community, many have remembered Dieperink not only for his achievements on the field but also for his dedication to the game throughout his career.
His death marks the loss of a respected referee whose influence extended beyond Dutch football to the international stage.
