Police arrest two after seizing 73 suspected cannabis parcels, reject alleged GH¢300,000 bribe

Two suspects have been arrested after Bole Police intercepted 73 parcels of suspected cannabis and allegedly rejected a GH¢300,000 bribe during a highway operation.

The Bole District Police Command intercepted seventy-three parcels of a substance suspected to be cannabis, popularly known as Indian hemp, during a routine operation along the Banda Nkwanta–Teslima road in the Savannah Region.

The suspected narcotics were discovered in a Techiman-to-Wa-bound commercial vehicle, registration number AS 4874-25, after officers stationed at a police checkpoint became suspicious of conflicting explanations regarding luggage loaded onto the vehicle. A subsequent search uncovered the concealed parcels.

Police arrested the driver of the vehicle and a woman believed to be in her early forties, who allegedly claimed ownership of the consignment. Both are currently assisting investigators at the Bole Police Station.

Sources familiar with the investigation said the woman allegedly admitted transporting the suspected narcotic substance to Sengye, a community near Bole. Investigators are examining claims that the destination may be linked to illegal mining activities, although the intended use of the consignment has not yet been established.

According to police sources, the suspects allegedly offered officers GH¢300,000 in an attempt to secure their release. "But we all agreed on principle and declined the offer and proceeded with the arrest in accordance with established police procedures," a police source told Joy News.

The suspected substance will undergo forensic examination to confirm its composition before prosecutors determine the appropriate charges. The two suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue.

The operation forms part of intensified security efforts to curb the trafficking and distribution of illicit drugs along the Tuna–Bole–Techiman highway and other major transport corridors across Ghana.

The Savannah Regional Police Command says it remains committed to tackling narcotics trafficking and corruption and has urged the public to volunteer credible information to support the detection and prosecution of drug-related crimes.
