A mobile money vendor in Lashibi has recovered GH¢140,000 after a violent armed robbery attempt ended with one suspect being fatally shot during a gun exchange.
According to the Accra Regional Police Command, the incident occurred on Friday, July 3, 2026, when two armed men on a motorbike intercepted the victim’s vehicle in what is believed to have been a planned attack.
The robbers reportedly opened fire, damaging the vehicle’s rear tyre and windscreen before seizing a bag containing the cash and attempting to flee the scene.
The situation escalated when the vendor returned fire as the suspects tried to escape, resulting in one of the attackers being shot dead on the spot.
The second suspect fled the scene but abandoned the stolen cash during his escape, allowing the vendor to recover the full GH¢140,000, police confirmed.
A statement from the Accra Regional Police Command, signed by Head of Public Affairs Chief Superintendent Juliana Obeng, said the vendor escaped unhurt.
Police later recovered an AK-47 rifle, two magazines loaded with 55 rounds of ammunition, 11 additional rounds, GH¢3,000 in cash, a Samsung phone, and an ID card bearing the name Innocent Elemuwa Akachukeu, aged 46.
Crime scene investigators also retrieved five AK-47 shell casings and two pistol casings from the area, indicating a heavy exchange of gunfire.
The body of the deceased suspect has been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary for preservation, identification, and autopsy.
Meanwhile, police have launched a manhunt for the second suspect who remains at large and are urging the public to provide information that could assist investigations via emergency numbers 18555 or 191.
