The National Peace Council (NPC) has urged calm and restraint among political actors following rising tensions triggered by recent arrests of some political figures over alleged unlawful public utterances.
The Council, which is mandated under Act 818 to prevent, manage, and resolve conflicts, said it considers the current developments significant enough to warrant a renewed appeal for peace, moderation, and responsible public engagement.
The call comes in the wake of the arrest and detention of the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe (Abronye DC), who is facing charges of alleged offensive conduct and related offences.
The incident has sparked political backlash, with sections of the NPP accusing the government of political persecution and reportedly petitioning foreign diplomatic missions over the matter.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, the Council expressed concern about the situation and stressed that the rule of law, due process, and respect for constitutional rights remain fundamental pillars of Ghana’s democracy as enshrined in the 1992 Constitution.
It called on security and judicial institutions to act with impartiality, transparency, and professionalism in the discharge of their duties, while ensuring that the rights and freedoms of citizens are upheld at all times.
“It is in this vein that we call on our respected Security and Judicial Institutions to act with impartiality, transparency, and professionalism, and ensure that the rights and freedoms of citizens are always upheld in the performance of their lawful duties,” the statement said.
The NPC further urged political parties, communicators, and public actors to avoid inflammatory and unsubstantiated statements that could heighten tensions or incite violence.
“The National Peace Council, similarly, calls on political parties, their communicators, and actors to refrain from making unsubstantiated, inflammatory statements and actions that have the potential to incite violence in the country,” it added.
The Council also cautioned political commentators both in Ghana and abroad to be mindful of their public remarks, warning that such statements could undermine national cohesion and stability.
According to the statement, Ghana’s peace and stability depend on the ability of citizens and political actors to disagree constructively without resorting to insults or violence.
The NPC also announced plans to engage leadership of political parties in the coming days to initiate dialogue aimed at de-escalating tensions and finding lasting solutions to the situation.
