The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has revealed that only 5% of health facilities nationwide have the full complement of equipment required to deliver quality healthcare.
Speaking to the media after a visit to the Mother and Child Hospital in Kasoa, he said the country's equipment status is very poor and that he inherited the situation from the previous government.
"In fact the statistics show that only 5% health facilities have the full compliment of equipment to deliver their work. Our equipment status in this country is very very poor and that is what I inherited," he stated.
Mr Akandoh added that the government has adopted a strategy to address primary healthcare facility shortfalls and has purchased a number of items to be distributed to health facilities across the regions.
He said distribution has begun region by region, starting with the Oti Region.
He further asserted that equipment will first be delivered to regional capitals before being sent to district hospitals.
"We have one strategic dealing with the primary healthcare facilities, so we have bought a number of quantities of hospital equipment that we are distributing across the length and breadth of this country, we are going to benefit out of that.
"We have started, we are doing region by region, we went to the Oti Region, so every region we are doing the distribution to the regional capitals and future distribute to the other hospitals," he said.
