Five suspected members of a robbery syndicate believed to have been operating across parts of the Central Region have been arrested by the Police Intelligence Unit of the Central East Regional Police Command following an undercover operation that exposed an alleged attempt to procure firearms for a planned highway robbery.
The suspects are alleged to be part of a criminal network linked to a series of violent robberies in parts of Kasoa, Agona Swedru, and Millennium City.
According to the Central East Regional Police Command, the arrests were made after intelligence indicated that one of the suspects, identified as Bismark Amponsah, had contacted an individual in Kasoa seeking to rent firearms for use in a planned highway robbery.
Unknown to him, the individual he contacted was an undercover operative with the Command’s Police Intelligence Unit.
Police say the officer arranged a covert meeting with Amponsah at an undisclosed guest house, where a staged transaction was carried out. During the encounter, the officer presented a firearm from a bag, which Amponsah inspected and photographed before sharing the images with his alleged accomplices via WhatsApp.
Investigators say the communication triggered confirmation of the gang’s intent, prompting a swift operation that led to the arrest of Amponsah and four others.
The remaining suspects have been identified as Abdul Razak Ibrahim, also known as “Langa,” Michael Annor Baah, popularly called “Money,” Razak Jibril alias “Salaala,” and Nana Yaw Bediako.
Police further disclosed that two of the suspects are ex-convicts who had recently completed long prison sentences for robbery-related offences, raising concerns about recidivism within organised criminal networks.
All five suspects have since been arraigned before the Ofaakor Circuit Court. They have been remanded into custody and are expected to reappear on May 27, 2026, as investigations continue.
Authorities say efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend any additional members of the alleged syndicate and to dismantle related robbery networks operating within the region.
