NDC relaunches ‘Setting the Records Straight’ to counter NPP ‘propaganda’

The National Democratic Congress has relaunched its “Setting the Records Straight” communication initiative, accusing the governing New Patriotic Party of spreading misinformation and propaganda ahead of the next political cycle.

Speaking at the party’s headquarters in Accra on Thursday, May 7, 2026, the NDC’s Deputy National Communications Officer, Godwin Ako Gunn, said the initiative was being revived to immediately challenge what he described as false narratives from the NPP.

According to him, the communication strategy was first introduced by the NDC’s current General Secretary, Fiifi Fiavi Kwartey, during the administration of former President John Agyekum Kufuor to counter alleged distortions about the achievements of the NDC under former President Jerry John Rawlings.

Mr. Gunn claimed the initiative played a major role in restoring public trust in the NDC and contributed to the party’s return to power in 2008.

“That initiative was not just political communication; it was a rescue mission for truth. It helped restore public confidence and ultimately contributed to regaining power,” he stated.

He further argued that the NDC administration led by former President John Dramani Mahama delivered several major development projects, including the E-Blocks educational infrastructure programme, the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, and Terminal 3 of the Kotoka International Airport.

However, he alleged that those projects were overshadowed by what he described as fabricated stories and propaganda from the NPP, which negatively affected the NDC’s public image and contributed to the party’s defeat in the 2016 general elections.

Mr. Gunn further accused the NPP of reviving similar tactics through claims relating to the Gold Board, Cocobod, and allegations that state funds had been used to procure four aircraft for the President.

He stressed that the NDC would now respond to such claims “in real time” instead of waiting until it loses political ground before countering misinformation.

“Today the same play mode is being deployed. Having failed to convince Ghanaians on policy and performance, the NPP has returned to propaganda, shifting from one false narrative to another, but this time we will not wait until we are in opposition before we stop them,” he said.

He maintained that the NDC’s loss in 2016 was not due to poor performance in government but rather the party’s failure to aggressively confront propaganda and misinformation.
