Dancehall artist Shatta Wale has accepted an apology from Awal Mohammed, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communication Team.
This comes after comments made on live television, where a portion of Shatta Wale's fans was referred to as "junkies."
Awal Mohammed publicly apologised following his appearance on Joy News’ morning programme. He clarified that the remark was made inadvertently during an intense debate regarding government bail conditions.
He acknowledged that his word choice was unnecessary, disrespectful, and out of character, emphasising that he did not intend to insult or demean Shatta Wale’s supporters.
“I respect the passion of fans and acknowledge that my choice of words was wrong. I sincerely apologise and hope we can move forward positively,” Awal Mohammed stated.
In response, the Shatta Movement, while expressing strong yet reconciliatory sentiments, recognised the apology but underscored that ongoing attacks and negative characterisations of Shatta Wale and his fan base must cease.
Their response underscored Shatta Wale’s role as a cultural icon representing numerous young and marginalised Ghanaians, asserting that criticism should be fair and respectful.
The statement further emphasised that the matter transcends music, addressing broader issues of respect, fairness, and the treatment of influential voices within media and public discourse.
While affirming the strength and unity of the Shatta Movement, it also called for national solidarity and progress, encouraging stakeholders to opt for dialogue over derogatory language.
