Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has called for an immediate end to attacks on firefighters, describing such actions as unacceptable and a threat to public safety.
Speaking during the 2026 International Firefighters’ Day celebration, he condemned what he described as an emerging trend of assaults on firefighters while they respond to emergencies.
He stressed that such attacks undermine efforts to save lives, noting that this year’s theme highlights the urgency of the issue.
“The emerging unpopular trend of attacking firefighters while attending to fire and related emergency calls is very unacceptable and appalling to say the least.
“An attack on firefighters and equipment is an attack on public safety; end assaults and protect the firefighter,” he stated.
He noted that many fire outbreaks are caused by human actions and inactions, and urged citizens to adopt safer practices.
He emphasised that people must change their behaviour in their homes and workplaces and be mindful of actions that could lead to fire outbreaks.
He also called on the public to practise fire safety as part of the change the country wants.
The Chief of Staff assured personnel of the Government’s commitment to improving their working conditions, revealing that efforts are underway to equip the service with modern tools to ensure efficiency and effectiveness in its operations.
He also honoured fallen firefighters, both globally and locally, acknowledging the risks associated with the profession.
Mr Debrah commended firefighters for their resilience and dedication, describing their role as critical to national safety, and encouraged officers to remain committed to their duties despite the challenges they face.
He further urged the public to support the work of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) by adhering to fire safety measures and cooperating with officers during emergencies.
“Today, we honour the memories of our fallen heroes who have perished in line of duty whilst ensuring that other lives are preserved, your sacrifices and selflessness are responsible for the safety of many lives and properties.
“Fire safety cannot and should not be the sole responsibility of the Fire Service, the change we are looking for starts from you. From our houses to our workplace, let us practise fire safety and encourage others to do same,” he said.
