ECG restores power in Kumasi after pythons disrupt substation operations

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has restored power to parts of Kumasi following an unusual incident involving pythons at a substation in Ahodwo.

In a statement issued on Monday, April 27, the company said the disruption occurred on April 22, when residents along the Ahodwo–Daban–Dr. Asafo Adjei Road experienced a sudden outage due to a fault on a distribution feeder.

ECG indicated that a fault response team from its Ahinsan District was promptly dispatched to assess and resolve the issue. While power was restored to some customers, supply remained interrupted in areas around Cocoa Depot and the Star Sawmill enclave due to a lingering fault.

The situation took an unexpected turn when engineers attempting to replace a faulty fuse at a nearby transformer discovered a python within the substation, hindering access to critical equipment.

Ahinsan District Engineer, Ing. Kwaku Appiah, explained that the reptile had taken refuge within the facility, making repair work difficult and risky.

Initial attempts by residents to remove the snake proved unsuccessful after it reportedly retreated beneath the substation structure. Despite the challenge, ECG engineers proceeded with the repairs and successfully restored power to the remaining affected areas.

According to the statement, the team acted within a limited window to carry out the necessary work after efforts to capture the python failed.

The incident was subsequently reported to the Kumasi Zoo, whose officials later discovered two pythons and a number of eggs at the site. The reptiles were eventually captured later that evening, bringing the situation under control.

ECG’s Ashanti West Regional General Manager, Ing. George Amoah, urged customers to report outages through official channels, including the company’s contact centre and verified digital platforms, to enable timely and safe responses.
