ECG apologises over power outages after Akosombo substation fire; restoration ongoing

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has apologised to customers affected by recent power outages following a fire outbreak at the Akosombo substation of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), assuring that efforts are underway to restore full electricity supply.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Sunday, April 26, ECG’s General Manager for External Relations, Dr. Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, disclosed that the incident disrupted approximately 1,000 megawatts of power. Despite the significant loss, he noted that electricity supply has remained relatively stable in some parts of the country.

According to him, engineers are actively working to resolve the situation, with gradual restoration already taking place across sections of the transmission network.

“The situation at the Akosombo GRIDCo substation is still a work in progress. Some of the issues have been resolved, and certain parts of the country have regained full supply, while others are pending restoration as additional lines are fixed,” he explained.

Dr. Ayiku cautioned against calls for the introduction of a load-shedding timetable, describing such demands as premature under the current circumstances.

“It is too early to begin discussions about a load-shedding timetable,” he stated, expressing confidence in ongoing efforts to stabilise supply.

He further assured the public that engineers are working diligently to restore full power nationwide in the shortest possible time, urging customers to remain calm.

“The engineers have assured us that full supply will be restored soon. We urge the public to remain calm, as the situation is under control,” he said.

Dr. Ayiku also extended a formal apology to affected customers, describing the outage as the result of an unexpected and major incident that impacted a critical control room facility.

“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused to our cherished customers. This was an unforeseen incident which affected an entire control room and significantly disrupted operations,” he noted.

He added that ECG is working closely with GRIDCo and the Volta River Authority (VRA) to ensure the swift restoration of electricity supply across the country.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has directed the Chief Executive Officer of GRIDCo to step aside pending investigations into the fire outbreak at the Akosombo Power Control Centre.
