Ghana’s High Commissioner urges calm after viral video incident in South Africa

The High Commissioner of Ghana to South Africa, Benjamin Anani Quashie, has met with Emmanuel Asamoah the Ghanaian featured in the viral video that reportedly involved an interview with alleged members of the Patriotic Alliance in South Africa.

During the meeting at the High Commissioner's office, Mr Quashie confirmed that Asamoah was indeed the person shown in the video. He also said that nothing bad had happened to him, adding that he was doing well and that everything was going smoothly.

"The little thing I will say is, I am doing very good yes the video you saw was me but by the grace of God nothing bad happened to me and I am with the high commissioner here have a conversation." Asamoah stated.

He also addressed his mother in Ghana directly: "And my own mother 'Obaatanpa' just stay calm, I am very good and fit," he said.

The High Commissioner urged all Ghanaians in South Africa and elsewhere to obey the laws of the countries in which they live, warning that they should not fall into similar trouble again. He noted that Ghanaians are widely known for being law-abiding people and advised them to maintain that reputation.

He further reassured both Asamoah and all Ghanaians in South Africa and Ghana that he, together with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Ozzy Lamola, would work to resolve the matter, emphasising that they are there to serve and protect Ghanaians.

"I encourage the Ghanaian population that we understand the situation let's continue to be law abiding let's continue to respect the rules and regulations and the rules of engagement as migrants citizens in this country, we have always been noted as Ghanaians to be law abiding.

"I'm sure that hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa together with the good minister of the department of international relations, we will be able to resolve the issue and then we move on we are hereto protect all Ghanaians staying here," he said.
