ECG injects 2,500 transformers to stabilise power supply - Kwabena Kpekpena

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced plans to inject 2,500 distribution transformers into the national grid as part of a $278 million emergency intervention to ease pressure on the network and improve electricity supply reliability.

At a press briefing, Acting Managing Director (MD) of ECG, Julius Kwame Kpekpena, said the initiative is a targeted response to persistent infrastructure challenges, focusing on relieving overloaded equipment and strengthening key components of the distribution system under “Operation Keep the Light On”.

“We are injecting 2,500 distribution transformers to relieve the overloaded ones we currently have, and we are replacing hundreds of damaged transformers, those that have already been damaged and have been removed from the network, we need to replace them,” he said.

He stated that ECG is replacing 1,600 rotting poles in low-voltage networks under a programme called “Operation Keep the Light On”, while also installing 2,500 11-metre treated poles under the same initiative.

He indicated that ECG is providing cable terminations and joints for underground cables to support rectification works across 11kV and 33kV networks.

He added that ECG will replace rectifiers and protection systems at substations across selected regions, while distributing fuses and distribution panels across the network.

“We are replacing rectifiers and protection systems at substations across Accra East, Accra West, Ashanti, Tema, Western and Volta, and we are distributing 28,000 fuses and 240 distribution panels across the network,” he disclosed.
