The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has disclosed that, due to inadequate resources, teacher recruitment in the country has been reduced.
According to him, this has not been possible because of budgetary constraints. However, he said that, with sufficient funding, the Ghana Education Service (GES) would have employed up to 50,000 teachers across the country.
Speaking to the media, he explained that the Ministry had received approval from the Ministry of Finance to recruit up to 7,000 teachers with degrees and diplomas.
"There is a teacher deficit in Ghana, if resources were available we should be employing and recruiting up to 500,000 teachers across the country.
"But owing to budgetary constraints we are unable to do that, the minister of education received clearance from the ministry of finance to recruit up to 7,000 teachers with degree and diplomas," he stated.
He further explained that the process had been advertised in an open and transparent manner to prevent bias and ensure fairness.
The Minister revealed that the recruitment portal was closed when the number of applications reached 40,000 to avoid inflated or stamped figures.
However, he added that applicants would be assessed through clinical examinations to determine readiness, competence, and qualifications, and that the best candidates would be selected.
"Those who were fortunate will be clinically examined and accessed in terms of their readiness, their competence and qualifications, and the best 7,000 over 40,000 applicants, and we have only room 7,000 applicants.
"So we will take the best out of the 40,000 better luck for those who have an opportunity to have clearance from hon Minister for finance," he said.
