The Member of Parliament (MP) for Offinso South and Ranking Member on Agriculture, Dr. Isaac Yaw Opoku, has accused President John Dramani Mahama of attempting to collapse Ghana’s agricultural sector.
Speaking during a minority caucus engagement at Tromenso in the Wenchi constituency with farmers, Hon. Opoku said the 2025 budget allocated only GH₵2.9 billion to the agricultural ministry, a figure he and the minority described as insufficient.
Mr. Opoku expressed concern that by September, the government had released only 16% of the already limited budget, crippling the ministry’s operations.
He attributed the minister’s frequent project launches without execution to the dire financial situation, citing the failed Nkoko nkitenkite project as an example.
Mr. Opoku also highlighted the government’s unfulfilled promise to release the allocated GH₵200 million for maize buffer stock purchases, leaving farmers struggling.
"The reason why I'm saying this is that, 2025 the budget allocated to the ministry was 2.9 billion and we told the president that, 2.9 billion is not enough and he responded that that what he can give.
"The 2.9 billion that was allocated for the ministry, when we got September and in every year we have four quarters and when the third quarter was about to come to an end for the ministry to meet their committee.
"Then money allocated to the ministry was just 16% meanwhile the money released to the ministry was not enough and still giving only 16% he can't use this percentage for anything, so if you see Mr. Eric Opoku, is nothing but always launching this, launching that," he said.
