The National Identification Authority (NIA) has dismissed reports suggesting that the Ghana Card can now be used for financial transactions, describing such claims as inaccurate and misleading.
In a statement signed by the Head of Corporate Affairs Directorate, Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, the Authority stressed that the Ghana Card has not been activated for any financial transaction purposes.
“The Ghana Card has not been activated for financial transaction purposes at this time,” the NIA stated, urging the public to disregard contrary claims circulating in sections of the media and on social platforms.
The Authority further advised the public to rely solely on official communication channels for accurate information.
“Members of the public are advised to disregard any such claims and are encouraged to rely only on official communications from the National Identification Authority,” the statement added.
The NIA, however, acknowledged ongoing high-level discussions involving policymakers and key institutions within the financial and regulatory sectors on the possible future integration of the Ghana Card into financial systems.
According to the Authority, these engagements form part of broader efforts to enhance digital identity usage and promote financial inclusion in Ghana. However, it emphasized that no final decision has been reached.
“These deliberations remain inconclusive as of the time of this release,” the statement noted.
The Authority assured the public that any official decision regarding the use of the Ghana Card for financial transactions would be formally communicated through verified channels.
Reaffirming its mandate, the NIA stated that it remains committed to safeguarding the integrity, security, and proper use of the National Identification System.
