The presidential special envoy for reparations, Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, has stated that the aim of reparations is to enhance the value that other races place on Black people.
In an interview, he stressed that a widespread misperception about Black skin lowers the esteem in which white people hold Black people.
He said reparations will help bring greater equality between Black and white people in certain social spheres, adding that although the process will be difficult, it will achieve results gradually.
"There’s some general misperception of the value of the black skin and so the concerns that ability to buy human being as a slave in trade, are almost all black people it lowers the esteem of black people in the minds of the white people.
"So as we go about the course of reparations we hope to improve and increase the value that the other races in the world have for black people," he stated.
Spio-Garbrah added that healing through reparations involves understanding how racism affects people’s behaviour, stability and emotional state.
He cited incidents in the Western world, such as bananas being thrown at Black athletes, as examples of the misperception reparations seek to address; however, he opined that the process will help heal those who experience such acts.
He also urged Black people to conduct themselves appropriately within governance and cultural systems in order to earn the respect they deserve.
He further called on pastors and prophets to support the reparations agenda by preaching against slavery and racism to help President Mahama achieve this aim for the benefit of all countries that have experienced racism and slavery.
"We have all these pastors and prophets who are predicting all kinds of things around Africa they can also move into the reparational agenda and help us to heal from those societies that have been badly bruised especially the Western world," he uttered.
