Alliance Drivers of Ghana announce 30% lorry fare increase over fuel price surge

Lorry fare increase has been announced by the Alliance Drivers of Ghana, with a 30 percent hike set to take effect nationwide from April 4, 2026.

In a statement issued on April 1, the group said the decision follows sustained increases in fuel prices, which have significantly driven up the cost of transport operations.

The Alliance explained that fuel remains a major component of their expenses, and the continuous upward trend has made it unsustainable to maintain current fare levels.

“Over the past months, we have experienced significant increases in fuel prices, which have directly impacted our cost of operations,” the statement said.

“After extensive consultations with our members and key stakeholders, we have no option but to adjust fares by 30 percent to sustain our livelihoods.”

The lorry fare increase in Ghana is expected to affect commuters across the country, with the Alliance acknowledging the potential hardship the adjustment may impose.

“We sympathize with the public during these challenging times. However, without this increment, many drivers would be unable to operate, which could lead to a shortage of transport services,” the statement added.

The group has directed all drivers under its umbrella to comply with the new fare structure once it takes effect.

Beyond the increment, the Alliance is calling for urgent government intervention to address rising fuel costs and broader economic pressures affecting the transport sector.

Proposals outlined include a reduction in fuel taxes, targeted subsidies, removal of the Dumsor levy, and policy measures aimed at stabilizing prices.

The Alliance Drivers of Ghana reaffirmed its commitment to providing reliable transport services and pledged continued engagement with authorities to find sustainable solutions.

The statement was signed by Kwaku Boateng, Public Relations Officer of the Alliance Drivers of Ghana, with support from Central Regional PRO, Lawyer Adu Yeboah.
