'I will present to cabinets and make a decision on the fees that security service recruits are required to pay' - President Mahama

President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has said he will present the matter to Cabinet for a decision on the fees security service recruits are required to pay for future recruitment exercises.

Speaking during a dialogue with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) on Monday, 30 March, he said it is painful for an unemployed youth to pay GHC200 for the aptitude test and then be told they have been disqualified.

"But I also think that in future we should look at the fees they pay, for an unemployed to pay GHC 200 and you get in your mobile phone that you have been disqualified, I mean is a very painful thing so let look at the fees they pay," he stated.

He added that recruitment should not focus only on the digital aptitude test but also take into account physical appearance, psychological attributes and bravery, noting that qualities that indicate whether a recruit can stand firm and face attacks when required, rather than run away.

He urged the ministry to find a way to combine the aptitude test with other assessments that will help determine a recruit’s suitability for security service roles before they are enrolled.

"If you send your recruits to let me say Bawku, Nkwata or Sampa, or anywhere there are flash points and there is an action and there is an attacks sometimes the 65% aptitude people will be the first to run, the 40% aptitude because he is brave and courageous might be the one who will stand and repel the attack so is not only the aptitude.

"Because of digitalisation now, we want digitalisation this things, we want it to be transparent and things but when the security services come under fire sometimes it is the 65% and above who will run, so I'm saying let find a way of combining not only the aptitude but the other features," he uttered.
