Black Stars coaching race: Renard, Kwesi Appiah lead after Otto Addo exit — Yaw Ampofo Ankrah

The search for a new head coach of the Black Stars has officially begun following the dismissal of Otto Addo after Ghana’s 1-0 defeat to Germany on Monday, March 30, 2026.

The Ghana Football Association confirmed that Addo’s sacking takes immediate effect, leaving the national team without a coach with less than three months to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Two prominent candidates have already emerged as frontrunners — Hervé Renard, a two-time AFCON-winning coach currently managing Saudi Arabia, and former Black Stars coach James Kwesi Appiah.

However, both are under contract with their respective national teams — Saudi Arabia and Sudan — complicating any immediate appointment.

Amid growing speculation, Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, revealed that authorities are closely monitoring developments around Renard.

“I have already received several messages about this coach as a potential long-term replacement option for Ghana. GFA President Kurt E. S. Okraku is fully aware that Herve Renard at present is with Saudi Arabia where the Arabians re-signed him for the World Cup.

“I am also reliably informed that Coach Renard is having a dicey relationship with the Saudis and his future might be reviewed after the game with Serbia on Tuesday evening. Sports Minister Hon Kofi Iddi Adams is 100% alert to the developments,” he said in a Facebook post.

The Black Stars’ coaching position has seen frequent changes in recent years, with Addo becoming the latest in a line of coaches that includes Chris Hughton, Milovan Rajevac, Charles Akonnor, and Akwasi Appiah.

With the World Cup fast approaching, the GFA faces mounting pressure to appoint a competent coach capable of stabilising the team and delivering results on the global stage.
