Minority demands refunds for failed applicants of security services recruitment

The minority members of Parliament have called for a refund of GHC 113 million for applicants who were unsuccessful in the recent security services recruitment.

During a press conference led by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin South Constituency, John Ntim Fordjour, he emphasised that the government's handling of the recruitment exercise appears to have been designed to defraud and exploit innocent, unemployed Ghanaian youth.

This demand follows a statement from the Minister of the Interior, Muntaka Muhammed-Mubarak, who disclosed that only 5,000 applicants would be recruited from over 506,000 young people who applied.

Hon. Ntim Fordjour expressed concerns over the government's decision to raise the previous age limit from 25 to 35 years, suggesting that this change was intended to give applicants the impression that there was a greater opportunity for recruitment, thereby misleading many hopeful candidates.

"If the government intended to recruit only 5,000 personnel, as the Minister of the Interior disclosed yesterday, why should the government overpromise and lure over 506,000 unsuspecting young people to go through this costly and emotionally exhausting process?" he questioned.

He further insisted that the government refund the application fee of GHC 220 to all applicants who were disqualified.

Mr. Fordjour demanded that an independent bipartisan probe be conducted into the entire centralised recruitment process for an immediate and appropriate review before it continues.

"First, there must be an independent bipartisan probe into the entire centralised recruitment process for immediate and appropriate review before we continue.

"Two very, very importantly, we must respond to the plight of the half a million potential recruits who have been scammed. We demand that the government must refund the application fees," he stated.
