FDA investigates alleged use of plastics in frying plantain chips

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has launched an investigation into reports that some vendors may be using plasti during the preparation of plantain chips.

In a public notice issued on March 11, 2026, the Authority said it had observed videos and social media reports alleging that polyethylene is being added to frying oil to enhance the crispiness and shelf life of plantain chips.

According to the FDA, it has begun nationwide market surveillance and laboratory testing of plantain chips to verify the claims and ensure consumer safety.

The Authority warned that deliberately melting plastic in cooking oil constitutes chemical contamination of food and makes the product unsafe for human consumption.

The FDA explained that introducing plastic materials such as Low-Density Polyethene (LDPE) into hot oil can cause harmful chemicals to migrate into food. These substances may include plasticisers, phthalates and antioxidants.

According to the FDA, scientific research suggests that prolonged consumption of such chemicals may lead to serious health risks including endocrine disruption, hormonal imbalances and an increased risk of certain cancers.

Citing Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851), the FDA stressed that the sale of contaminated or unwholesome food is a criminal offence. It warned that any vendor found engaging in the practice will face prosecution and the possible permanent closure of their business.

The Authority also advised consumers to be cautious when purchasing plantain chips, urging them to avoid products that have a strong chemical smell, a plastic-like aftertaste, or unusual texture that does not change over time.

The FDA said it is working with local authorities and the Ghana Police Service to monitor food vendors and enforce compliance with food safety regulations.

Food processors and vendors have also been urged to follow proper hygiene standards and obtain the required FDA food hygiene and vendor permits.

The Authority assured the public that updates will be provided once laboratory analysis from the ongoing investigations becomes available, while encouraging citizens to report any suspicious food preparation practices through its official communication channels.
