The Electoral Commission of Ghana EC has set Tuesday, March 3, 2026, for a highly anticipated parliamentary by-election in the Ayawaso East Constituency, a contest that will test party influence in the area following the late Hon Mahama Naser Toure’s tenure.
The by-election comes after the death of the constituency’s MP, which has left the seat vacant and triggered keen interest from multiple political parties and independent candidates.
In a press release dated January 16, 2026, the Commission outlined the nomination process and schedule for aspiring candidates. According to the release signed by Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairman for Operations, nominations will be received at the Ayawaso East Municipal Office of the EC in North Ridge from Monday, February 9, to Wednesday, February 11, 2026, between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., and from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily.
Interested candidates can download nomination forms from the EC’s official website, www.ec.gov.gh/forms, starting Friday, January 16, 2026. Completed forms must be submitted in quadruplicate, either by the candidate personally or by their proposer or seconder, within the nomination period.
Candidates must ensure their forms are endorsed by a proposer and seconder, both registered voters in the constituency, and supported by eighteen other registered voters from Ayawaso East.
Each candidate is also required to submit two recent bust sized photographs against a red background and pay a non-refundable filing fee. The fee is GH¢10,000 for general candidates and GH¢7,500 for female candidates and persons with disabilities PWDs.
The by-election is being conducted under Article 112 (5) of the 1992 Constitution, as amended, which mandates the EC to fill a parliamentary vacancy promptly.
The Commission has urged the public to stay informed and participate actively, as the outcome of the Ayawaso East by-election could shape political dynamics in the lead-up to the next general election.
