Asante Kotoko's assistant coach, Hamza Obeng, has extended a heartfelt apology to the club's supporters after a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Karela United tarnished their Ghana Premier League title aspirations.
The Porcupine Warriors left the Aliu Mahama Stadium empty-handed on Sunday, March 8, following a challenging Matchday 25 encounter that saw the visitors struggle with both discipline and clinical finishing.
The crucial moment came in the first half when Malik Abubakar scored for Karela United, taking advantage of a lapse in the visitors' defence.
Kotoko's challenges were compounded just before the interval; defender Henry Ansu received a red card in the 40th minute, forcing the Kumasi-based side to navigate more than half the match with only ten men.
Despite a spirited effort in the second half to equalise, the numerical disadvantage proved too great for the record champions to overcome in the heat of Tamale.
Speaking to the media shortly after the final whistle, a dejected Hamza Obeng acknowledged the pain felt by the supporters but remained committed to achieving the club's silverware ambitions.
"We are down with the result that we had today, but it’s part of the game. We need to take it aside and concentrate on our next game," Obeng said.
"Unfortunately for us, we were not able to put the ball in the back of the net, and we conceded that easy goal at the time we were down by one man. We are sorry for losing this game, but the league title race is not over yet."
The loss at the Aliu Mahama Stadium highlights a concerning trend for the Ghanaian giants.
Kotoko have now faced defeat in three of their last five league matches. Their only bright spot during this recent run was a 2-0 victory over Young Apostles FC, raising concerns among fans about the team's consistency as the season approaches its climax.
As a result of this defeat, Asante Kotoko now sits in fifth place on the Ghana Premier League table with 39 points.
While the gap at the top of the standings is widening, the Kumasi side must quickly bounce back to remain in contention.
All eyes now turn to their upcoming fixture against Nations FC. For the Kotoko hierarchy, the focus will shift entirely to tactical discipline and composure in front of goal if they are to reignite their quest for the 2025/2026 title.
