The Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mayor (Rtd) Dr. Joseph Bukanyi Kuyon, has urged Ghanaians to maintain clean drains and refrain from constructing buildings in waterways.
According to him, Ghanaians should avoid the siltation of water bodies to mitigate disasters in our communities.
In a message delivered on Sunday, March 1, 2026, coinciding with the commemoration of World Civil Defence Day under the theme "Managing Environmental Risks for a Resilient and Sustainable Future," Dr. Kuyon emphasised the importance of these actions for fostering resilience and sustainability in Ghana.
He highlighted the ongoing climate-induced disasters facing the country, including floods, droughts, coastal erosion, and fires, which severely impact lives and property, posing significant financial burdens on the economy.
Dr. Kuyon called on citizens to do their part in combating these disasters.
"Together we can build a resilient and safe nation," he stated.
Dr. Kuyon acknowledged the tireless efforts of NADMO officers and volunteers nationwide, who have worked to strengthen early warning systems, enhance community preparedness, and improve disaster response and coordination.
They have also provided vital support to disaster victims across various communities.
He assured that NADMO would continue to focus on promoting disaster risk reduction, mitigating the risks associated with climate change, and encouraging environmental regeneration.
Furthermore, he reminded Ghanaians that civil defence is a collective responsibility, not solely that of NADMO. He urged everyone to come together to combat disasters.
"But remember civil defence is a shared responsibility and not NADMO's alone. If we can all keep our drains clean, avoid building in waterways, and prevent the silting up of our water bodies, we will be working to reduce disaster risk and climate change impacts on our societies," he stated.
