GRA interdicts five customs officers over Niger transit cargo irregularities

The Ghana Revenue Authority has interdicted five officers from its Customs Division following irregularities uncovered during an enforcement operation involving transit cargo bound for Niger.

In a press release dated February 24, 2026, the Authority said the officers have been suspended with immediate effect pending the outcome of an internal investigation.

The interdictions stem from preliminary findings linked to an operation conducted on February 18, 2026, which focused on a consignment declared as transit cargo for onward movement to Niger. According to GRA, discrepancies were detected in the documentation and compliance with established transit procedures, raising concerns significant enough to warrant a comprehensive internal review.

While the Authority did not disclose the exact nature of the anomalies, it indicated that initial assessments point to possible procedural breaches that require further scrutiny. GRA noted that the investigation will establish the full facts, determine individual responsibility, and assess any departures from laid-down Customs protocols. The scope of the inquiry, it added, may be expanded to include additional officers where necessary.

Transit cargo operations are considered a sensitive component of Ghana’s trade regime, given the country’s role as a key corridor for landlocked neighbours such as Niger. Any lapses, the Authority warned, could expose the state to revenue losses and undermine confidence in border enforcement systems.

GRA assured stakeholders that the interdictions reflect its commitment to safeguarding national revenue, supporting local industry growth, and upholding professionalism and accountability in revenue mobilisation.
