Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has strongly condemned the terrorist attacks carried out on February 21, 2026, in Zamfara State, northwestern Nigeria, describing the assault as heinous and coordinated.
In a statement, he said that the attacks, which reportedly left more than 50 civilians dead and led to the abduction of women and children, represent a grave violation of human rights and pose a serious threat to peace, security, and stability on the continent.
The Chairperson expressed the African Union's full solidarity with the Government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, conveying heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families while wishing a swift recovery to those injured.
He reaffirmed the African Union's unwavering support for Nigeria's efforts to address insecurity and restore lasting peace.
However, he called for the immediate, safe, and unconditional release of all abducted women and children and urged strengthened, coordinated, and collective action to protect civilian populations.
H.E. Ali Youssouf pointed out that preventing the recurrence of such atrocities is in line with the African Union's commitment to peace, security, and stability on the continent.
