Kwadwo Poku questions 30 year delay on ECOWAS single currency

A member of the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) Communications Team, Kwadwo Poku, has expressed concern over the Economic Community of West African States’ (ECOWAS) three-decade-long deliberation on establishing a single currency for West Africa.

Speaking in an interview on GHOne TV, Mr Poku criticised politicians, government officials and heads of state who attend extravagant African Union (AU) meetings, saying implementation remains a significant issue.

“How come it is taking 30 years for ECOWAS to sit and say we want a single currency for West Africa,” he remarked.

Mr Poku noted that in 2020 a directive was issued to launch the establishment of a single currency, yet six years on there has been no progress.

He also alleged that a major unresolved challenge is the influence of Western powers.

“The Francophone countries are not signing on because of the influence of the 'safe zone.' They have realized that France dominates that space and dictates what happens in Francophone countries,” he added.
