Afenyo-Markin calls recent Cocoa price cut a first in Ghana’s history

The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has said that the recent reduction in cocoa prices per bag marks the first such decrease in Ghana’s history.

Addressing members of the Tertiary Students Confederation (TESCON), Afenyo-Markin highlighted the uniqueness of the situation, stating that this has never happened before in Ghana.

He referenced historical events from the Gold Coast era and the National Liberation Movement (NLM), noting that when colonial authorities attempted to lower cocoa prices, the Asante people rallied alongside cocoa farmers to oppose the decision.

“They fought the colonial government; even then, our colonial masters respected the cocoa farmers,” he stated.

Hon. Afenyo-Markin further criticised the National Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing them of reportedly prioritising luxury.

"The NDCs have managed to buy private jets and yet cannot find money to pay cocoa farmers; they should come and pay them." he uttered.

He also highlighted the previous government’s performance during the COVID‑19 pandemic, stating that President Akufo‑Addo’s administration successfully paid every public‑sector worker without delay.

"COVID was a shaker; even in such difficulty, Akufo‑Addo managed to ensure that not a single month passed without a person's pay being made," he stated.
