The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has pledged comprehensive support for victims of alleged digital sexual exploitation after intimate videos involving a foreign national and a number of Ghanaian women circulated online without the women’s consent.
In an official statement from the ministry’s Public Affairs Unit, officials condemned the non-consensual recording and distribution of intimate images as both a criminal offence and a severe violation of the dignity and privacy of those affected.
The ministry said it is coordinating confidential support services for victims, including psychosocial care and legal assistance, to protect their welfare and privacy.
Preliminary reports included in the statement indicate the suspect may currently be outside Ghana’s jurisdiction.
The ministry stressed, however, that the suspect’s possible absence from the country “does not reduce the seriousness of the alleged conduct or the State’s responsibility to pursue accountability.”
To that end, MoGCSP said it is working closely with the Ministry of Communication and Digital Innovations, the Ghana Police Service, and international partners to bolster reporting mechanisms, expedite takedown of abusive content, and pursue cross-border cooperation where necessary.
“The Ministry continues to work with relevant security institutions and international partners to explore all lawful options available, including mutual legal assistance,” the statement added.
The ministry urged victims to come forward through confidential channels so they can receive immediate psychosocial support and legal counsel, and warned the public against further sharing of the intimate material.
It also reminded citizens to exercise caution in their interactions both online and offline, and reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding the rights and dignity of the victims.
Authorities have yet to confirm details about any ongoing criminal investigation or the exact number of people affected.
The MoGCSP said it will continue to update the public as developments occur and as support services are put in place.
