Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has instructed the House to officially arrange for the contentious anti-LGBTQ bill to be considered, indicating a renewed effort to advance the long-stalled legislation.
The instruction follows increasing pressure from various segments of the public, civil society organisations, and religious groups demanding parliamentary action on the bill, formally known as the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill.
Parliamentary sources indicate that the action aims to provide clarity regarding the bill’s status, which has been delayed for several months, and to enable lawmakers to discuss and formulate a stance on the proposed legislation in accordance with parliamentary procedures.
“The bill has gone through all the processes in accordance with the Standing Orders of the House. I therefore direct that the bill be scheduled by the Business Committee to be presented to the House for consideration,” Alban Bagbin said.
